Greater Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church History

In 1964, Elder Shep Banks was inspired by God to organize the Greater Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church. Services were held in his home for about five months. The church moved to several other locations, however, the membership continued to increase as souls were added to the church. The Lord gave Pastor Banks a vision and directed him to 2129 Brookside Avenue, which we now own.

Pastor Banks served faithfully with his loving wife, Alberta, until he went home to be with the Lord on February 12, 2002. Although this devastated the membership, Greater Shepherd was still leaning and depending on the Lord. Through the trials and tribulations the church went through during this period without its founder, God yet kept Greater Shepherd Church in His hands. While many have counted us out, we yet believe when Jesus told Peter in Matthew 16:18, “Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

In May, 2004 the Lord sent us our current pastor, teacher, leader and visionary, Overseer J. Phillip Carroll. In the time of his tenure, Pastor Carroll has led us to accomplish some great things, such as:

  • Purchased a new worship facility (November 2012)
  • Community wide Church Officer’s Boot Camp to help train officers to be effective in their local church
  • Purchased two houses for rental
  • Purchased a lot
  • Purchased two new vans
  • The Pastor Shep and Alberta Banks Legacy Scholarship Annual Banquet
  • Community. Day
  • Expanded the Missionary Department to go out to provide for the homeless
  • Pastor’s Basketball Tournament
  • Increase in the number of adults going back to school to complete their GED and young people going to college.

It is the vision of Pastor Carroll to empower God's people in the city of Indianapolis and the Southside in particular, to experience spiritual growth, educational advancement and financial liberty while working to help people lives be ‘Greater’ through his preaching, teaching and obeying the divine orders from the Lord.
